For coaches trying StatLap this season

StatLap times races on the phones your team already owns, checks running form from a side-on clip, and publishes results to a page parents can read. Most of it is free with no account. This page is the short version, for a coach who was sent the link by another coach.

What you get on day one, free, with no account

Start Line and Finish Line
One phone listens for the gun and starts the clocks. Another films the finish and times each lane as it is crossed. Two phones on a fence make a timing system.
40-yard dash and speed gates
One phone fires the bang and times to the line. Two phones any distance apart give live metres a second and miles an hour.
Race Replay
Film the race, time it afterwards. It finds the gun and every crossing in the clip.
The Film Room
Slow motion, frame-step, angles from three taps, a skeleton on the athlete, and a Form check that names the fault and the drill. Sprints, starts, hurdles, jumps and throws.
Results pages
Every meet, athlete, team and leaderboard is public and free to read, forever.

What a plan adds

$71 a month, or $349 for a six-month season (saves 18%). Club: the phones' times and field marks land on your public meet page as they happen, the phones read heat sheets back off the site, and the club's clip library goes with it.

$12 a month, or $50 a season (saves 31%). Coach: the clip library only. Paste a link from YouTube, Drive or Hudl, add a note, send the athlete a link they can open with no account.

Fourteen days free, no card. Cancel from your own subscription page, any time, no call. Nothing you entered is ever deleted when a plan lapses: results stay public and exportable. Every feature, and which few a plan pays for.

What it is not

StatLap is not a certified timing system. Its times are app-timed, and every results page says so. It is for practice, time trials, dual meets, rankings and team records. A mark that must be certified fully automatic timing needs a certified system on the day.

How a first practice goes

  1. Open timing.statlap.com on two phones. Pick Start Line on one and Finish Line on the other. Both phones on the same Wi-Fi or hotspot.
  2. Prop the finish phone on the fence, square to the line, at hip height. Tap Learn the gun on the start phone and fire once, so it knows your starter.
  3. Run a heat. Times appear on the finish phone as each lane crosses. Run a second heat straight after to see it reset itself.
  4. Film one sprinter side-on with a third phone, whole body in frame, five to ten seconds. Open the Film Room, load the clip, tap Form check.
  5. Tell us what confused you and which number you did not believe. That is the whole ask.

What we ask of a tester

One practice or time trial run through it, and an honest note afterwards: what confused you, what you did not trust, what you would need before you used it at a meet. Reply to whoever sent you this, or write to support@statlap.com. We answer the same day.

What you will compare it with

Said plainly, because you will find out anyway.

A stopwatch
Hand times run about a quarter of a second fast and vary by who is holding it. Two phones remove the hand.
Hiring a timer
A certified FAT crew is the right answer for a championship. For a Tuesday time trial it is a thousand dollars you do not have.
Freelap or transponders
Excellent for split timing in training and honest about it. Chips on every athlete and a case of hardware to charge. StatLap uses the phones already in pockets.
OnForm, Hudl Technique
Fine video tools. StatLap's Film Room does the drawing and slow motion too, adds the skeleton and the Form check, and keeps the clip on the phone.
