How do you bring a thrower back after a long off-season?

A thrower who has not picked up an implement in three months is not the same athlete who hit a personal best in May, and treating week one like week two of last season is how backs get hurt.

A thrower who has not picked up a shot, a discus, or a javelin in three months is not the same athlete who threw a personal best at the end of last season. General strength and conditioning usually come back within a few weeks of training. The timing of a throw, the sequence where the hips start the release and the arm finishes it, fades faster and comes back slower.

What to do before a full effort throw

What to watch for on film during the ramp

The Film Room's throws setting reports release angle, whether the trunk stays tall over the drive leg, and whether the throwing arm stays long until the block. Checking those numbers during the light, technical weeks shows whether the sequencing is actually returning before you let the athlete throw hard in practice, rather than finding out at a meet that it had not.

Athletes can log throwing sessions to their StatLap training log the same way they would log reps on the Workout page, which turns the ramp up into a record a coach can look back over instead of a guess based on how far Saturday's throw landed.

A single 2D camera cannot tell you whether soreness coming out of the off-season is ordinary deconditioning or something structural that needs a medical opinion before the athlete throws at all. That call belongs to a doctor or athletic trainer, not to a clip.

Time your next meet with the phones you already have

Timing, the Film Room and the speed gates are free forever, with no account. A Club plan, $71 a month, puts your meets on your own results page, and one plan covers every phone.
