Your thrower got stronger and didn't throw further
A winter in the weight room, twenty kilos on the bench, and the same distance in April: where the strength is leaking out.
This is the most demoralising result in the sport, and it happens every spring. The athlete did everything asked of them all winter. They are visibly stronger. The shot goes exactly as far as it did in November.
Strength only counts if it arrives at the implement
A throw is a chain: the ground pushes the legs, the legs turn the hips, the hips turn the trunk, and the trunk delivers an arm that has been kept out of the way until the last possible moment. Strength added at one link is only worth anything if every link after it holds. Add twenty kilos to a squat and then let the trunk collapse forward at the finish, and the extra force goes into bending the athlete rather than moving the implement.
This is why a stronger thrower can be a worse thrower for a season. New force finds the weakest joint in the chain first.
The three leaks worth looking for
- The arm going early. If the throwing arm starts working before the hips have finished, the throw becomes an arm throw with a strong athlete attached. It usually feels powerful, which is the cruel part.
- The trunk folding over the drive leg. The leg pushes, the chest gives way, and the push disappears into the spine instead of the implement.
- A release angle nowhere near what the event wants. Plenty of throws that feel enormous go out at a flat angle and land embarrassingly early, and plenty of others go almost straight up.
What the Film Room checks
Pick the throws setting and it reports three things from a side-on clip: the release angle, taken from where the hand is travelling fastest; whether the trunk stays tall over the drive leg; and whether the throwing arm stays long until the block. Those are exactly the three leaks above, which is not a coincidence: they are the faults a single camera can honestly see.
The one it will actively push a drill at you for is the release angle, because that is the finding it treats as a fault. Under about 30 degrees it calls the throw flat, over about 45 it calls it steep, and either way it sends you to standing throws from the power position, so the only variable left is the release. The arm and the trunk it reports as information with a cue rather than as faults, so those numbers arrive without a drill beside them. The event's own list still holds the right answers: hip-lead work against a wall for an arm that goes early, and overhead back throws for a trunk that folds, which punish the fault immediately because a folded trunk sends the implement precisely nowhere.
It gives you the drill, never the dose. No sets, no reps, no loads. Prescribing volume to an athlete it has never met, most of whom are minors, is not something an app should be doing through a phone. How much is your call.
What it cannot tell you
It measures the body, not the implement. It does not track the shot, does not measure release velocity or release height, and cannot tell you how far the throw went. It also sees one plane: a discus turn does most of its interesting work in rotation, and a side-on camera will show you some of that and hide the rest.
So it will not replace watching the sector. It will tell you whether the strength you bought all winter is making it as far as the hand.
