Why your trail leg keeps clipping the hurdle
The knee that catches the barrier is usually paying for a mistake the lead leg made a tenth of a second earlier.
The lead leg goes over cleanly. The athlete looks fine. Then the trail knee catches the top of the barrier, the hurdle goes down, and the next three steps are spent recovering from something that happened behind them.
The trail leg is a passenger
It almost never has a fault of its own. The trail leg is pulled through into whatever space the takeoff and the lead leg left it, and if there is no space it hits the barrier no matter how well the athlete drives the knee. Coaching the trail leg directly, when the cause is upstream, is how a season gets spent on a drill that changes nothing.
Three things usually take the space away.
- Taking off too close. The body is still rising as it crosses the barrier, so the hips are low and behind, and the trail leg is dragged along the top rather than pulled over it.
- A lead leg that goes up rather than out and down. If the lead foot hangs, the athlete stays in the air longer, and the trail leg arrives at the barrier late, when the body has already started to come down.
- A trunk that stays upright. Without the dip, the hips have to climb to get the athlete over, and everything that follows the hips over the hurdle is higher and slower than it needed to be.
What StatLap measures, and what it does not
It does not measure your trail leg. That is worth saying plainly, because it is the thing you came here about. One phone at the side of the track sees the near half of an athlete; for half the barriers the trail leg is on the far side of the body, and for the other half it is hidden behind the torso at exactly the moment it matters.
What the hurdles analysis does report is trunk dip over the barrier, lead-leg extension, how far the hips rise at the hurdle, and overstride between barriers. Those four are the causes listed above, which is the useful accident here: the app cannot see the symptom, but it can see the three things that produce it. A hip rise that spikes at every barrier and a trunk that never dips is a clipped trail leg waiting to happen, and the numbers say so before the hurdle does.
The drills it sends you to
Walkover leads at a low height, to groove the chest-to-knee dip slowly enough that it can actually be corrected. Lead-leg snap-downs over a low barrier, which train the lower leg to extend and then pull straight back down instead of hanging. Close-spacing run-throughs, where the barriers are near enough together that floating is impossible and the hips have to stay flat.
None of those are trail-leg drills, and that is on purpose. The app names a drill only for a fault it can genuinely detect. Trail-leg work over the side of a hurdle is real coaching and you should still do it. It just will not come from a number on a phone.
