Why your long jumper keeps fouling
Three red flags in a row is rarely carelessness at the board. It is a run-up that was never the same length twice.
Nothing empties an athlete out faster than three fouls and no mark. And the advice they get afterwards is almost always the wrong advice: watch the board.
The board is the last place to look
A long jump approach is measured backwards from the board, which means the takeoff foot only lands in the right place if every step before it was the length it was supposed to be. An athlete who is a foot long at the board was not a foot wrong at the board. They were an inch wrong, six or eight times, on the way there.
This is also why telling somebody to look down at the board makes things worse. They drop their eyes, the trunk folds, the last two steps change, and now they are chopping to hit a target instead of accelerating through it, which costs distance even on the attempts that count.
The things that actually move a run-up
- The start. If the first step is not identical every time (same foot, same posture, same amount of lean), the whole approach is shifted before it has begun.
- Conditions. A headwind, a slower runway or a cold day shortens an approach; adrenaline at a meet lengthens it. A run-up set in practice in April is not the same distance in May.
- Effort. An athlete who accelerates harder because it is the final covers more ground in the same number of steps. Nothing is wrong with their technique; the mark is simply in the wrong place for the speed they are now running.
In all three cases the fix is to move the start mark, not to change the stride. Moving the mark keeps the jump intact. Changing the stride breaks the takeoff to save the foul, and a legal jump off a chopped last step is often shorter than the foul would have been.
Where video helps and where it does not
The Film Room's long jump setting reports the takeoff angle against the 18 to 22 degree band, hip rise as a share of body height, and trunk and arm position through the approach. What that is good for is the question underneath the fouling: is the athlete arriving at the board in a position to jump, or arriving in a position to survive? A takeoff angle well below the band, with the trunk folded and the last steps shortened, is the signature of somebody hunting for the board rather than running through it.
When the takeoff angle comes back under about 15 degrees the app calls it flat, and the cue it gives is to lower the hips slightly on the second-to-last step and drive the free knee up hard at the board. That one finding pulls in all three of the event's drills at once (short-approach takeoffs from a raised board, penultimate-step rhythm walk-ins, and bounding with the free knee driven up), because the second-to-last step is where the angle is decided. The board only collects what that step set up.
It cannot measure the foul. There is no run-up length, no distance-from-the-board reading, no attempt-by-attempt board accuracy, and nothing that tracks a check mark. A tape measure and a consistent starting point remain the actual tools for that, and they are cheap.
The realistic split: measure the run-up on the runway, and use the clip to find out whether the last two steps are still a jump or have quietly turned into a rescue.
