Why does your high jumper rotate too early over the bar?
Turning the shoulders before the feet have left the ground is usually the approach cashing a cheque the plant cannot cover.
A flop jumper is meant to be turning in the air, not on the ground. When the rotation starts before the plant foot has actually left the ground, the athlete is fighting the takeoff with the same muscles that are supposed to be producing it, and height goes missing that the approach clearly had available.
Where the early turn actually comes from
The curve is supposed to do this job. Run the arc properly and the lean it creates rotates the athlete naturally through the bar during the flight, after the plant has finished its work. When the curve is cut short, leaned into rather than run, or abandoned in the last two steps, there is no rotation left in the approach to spend in the air, so the athlete supplies it manually with the shoulders instead, and supplies it too soon.
- A curve that gets tighter than it should in the last two or three steps, so the body is already turning hard before the foot plants.
- The head and shoulders turning toward the bar early. The hips tend to follow the head, the same relationship that shows up in sprinting, and a head that turns at three steps out pulls the hips with it.
- A rushed final two steps that skip the plant's job entirely and let rotation stand in for the speed the approach should have been converting.
What StatLap can measure, and what it flatly cannot
The high jump analysis reports hip rise as a share of body height, takeoff angle, and knee fold and extension, all from the plant. If hip rise looks normal and the jumper is still rotating early, the plant did its job and the fault is upstream in the curve, which is worth knowing before you spend a session drilling the takeoff itself.
What it does not do is read rotation. That is a genuine gap rather than an oversight: turning into the bar happens largely across the camera's view rather than toward it, and a single side-on clip is a poor witness to a twist.
The fix lives in the approach, not the bar
Five-step curve runs with no bar let the athlete feel the arc doing the rotating instead of the shoulders doing it, without a height to be anxious about. It is worth being specific that this is a flop fix. A scissors jumper does not rotate through the bar the same way, so this particular fault, and this particular drill, belong to the flop.
A single side-on camera cannot see rotation into the bar at all. Watch that part with your own eyes, or film from the front, and treat the hip rise and takeoff angle numbers as the approach's report card rather than the whole story.
