Why does one of your sprinter's arms swing more than the other?

An uneven arm swing usually is not an arm problem. It is a report on which side of the trunk is doing more work.

It is a fault that is easy to spot and tempting to coach directly: one arm swings big and loose, the other stays tucked and small, and the obvious fix looks like telling the tight arm to loosen up. That usually does not hold past a few strides, because the arm is rarely the actual source of the problem.

Why symmetry is not the default

The arms exist mostly to cancel the twist the legs put through the pelvis with every stride. When one side of the body is doing more work, whether that is a stronger push leg or an old injury the athlete has quietly been favouring, the pelvis rotates unevenly, and the arms react to whatever twist actually reaches them. An arm swinging wide is very often balancing a hip that is turning more than it should, not misbehaving on its own.

What StatLap measures, and what it does not

The sprint analysis reports elbow angle against the roughly ninety degree norm, along with trunk lean, overstride and knee fold. That number is one figure for the whole clip. It will not by itself separate the left side from the right, so it cannot hand you an asymmetry on a plate, though it will tell you whether the wider arm has actually left the useful range.

The more direct way to use it is to watch the raw video first for which side is doing the unusual thing, then use the elbow number as a check on how far outside the norm that side actually is, rather than expecting the app to point at an asymmetry on its own.

A single side-on camera has a real blind spot here: it sees the near arm clearly and the far arm only partly, hidden behind the torso for part of the cycle. Comparing left to right properly means filming from directly behind or in front, where both arms are visible in the same frame at the same time.
