Why does my sprinter drift sideways out of the blocks?

Side-on video can confirm the drive phase looks fine and still miss the one plane where this fault actually lives.

A sprinter can have a clean drive angle, good back-leg extension, and still wander a lane width to one side in the first six steps. That is a different problem from standing up early or letting the hips climb, and it will not show up the same way on film.

What actually causes the drift

Most sideways drift out of the blocks comes from the push being uneven side to side, not front to back. One hand set further forward than the other on the line, a front block angled slightly off true, or a drive leg that is simply stronger than the other, and the first step lands off to that side before the athlete has any speed built up to correct it.

Why side-on film misses it

The Film Room's block start setting reads drive-phase trunk lean, whether the hips climb instead of driving out, and back-leg extension at clearance, all taken from a side-on clip. A camera placed on the side of the track is set up to see forward lean and leg angles in one plane. It has no way to register movement toward or away from the lens, which is exactly the direction a sideways drift happens in.

A single 2D camera filmed from the side cannot see left-right drift at all, not because the software falls short but because that motion happens in a plane the lens is not pointed at. Catching it needs a second camera set up behind the blocks looking straight down the lane, and even then it is a coach's eye on the footage, not a number the Film Room reports.

Most of what gets measured on video is filmed from one angle, and a whole category of fault lives in the angle nobody is filming.

Why does my sprinter's knee cross toward the other leg instead of driving straight?

A knee that drifts inward on the recovery leg is a different fault from arms crossing the body, and it is one a side-on camera is poorly placed to catch at all.

A quick reaction out of the blocks and a strong drive phase are two different skills, and the block start setting only grades the second one.
