Why does my hurdler's stride pattern fall apart on a windy day?

The steps between hurdles are built for still air, and wind changes the one variable a hurdler cannot adjust for mid-race: how far each stride actually carries.

A hurdler's step pattern between barriers is tuned in practice, on a day with whatever wind happened to be blowing, and then asked to hold on a meet day with different wind entirely. Three steps that carried an athlete cleanly to the next hurdle on a calm Tuesday can come up short or crowd the barrier on a gusty Saturday, and it has nothing to do with technique breaking down.

Which way the wind pushes the pattern

What to actually do about it

Count steps out loud or on film during warm-up strides in the actual wind of the day, not from memory of last week's practice. If a headwind is strong enough to be felt standing still, expect the pattern to tighten and be ready to add a half-step's worth of margin rather than forcing the usual rhythm into a hurdle it will not reach cleanly. This is a warm-up adjustment, not a mid-race one. Nobody recounts their steps between hurdle four and five.

What to check on film

The hurdles setting reads trunk dip over the barrier, lead-leg extension, hip rise at the hurdle, and overstride between barriers. A wind-shortened stride often shows up there as overstride on the next step, the body overcompensating for ground it did not expect to lose.

What a single 2D camera cannot tell you: how much wind was actually blowing, or from which direction. It will show you that the stride pattern changed hurdle to hurdle. It will not tell you why. Pair the clip with your own read of the conditions, because the camera has no idea the air was moving at all.

The step count between hurdles is decided by speed and stride length, not by age or grade, and film is a better test of readiness than a coach's gut feel on race day.

The step count between hurdles is a symptom, not the problem, and Film Room's overstride number usually moves before the pattern actually breaks.

A stride pattern that holds over flat hurdles can come apart on a curve for a reason that has nothing to do with fitness.
