What age should a kid start learning hurdles?
There is no right birthday for it. What matters is whether a kid's sprint stride and coordination can already survive an obstacle without breaking.
Parents ask this before a kid has ever stood over a hurdle: what age is right to start. There is no governing number for it. What matters is whether a kid can already do the things hurdling asks of a sprint stride, not how old they are on a birth certificate.
What has to be in place first
Hurdling is a sprint with one extra rule: the stride pattern has to survive an obstacle without breaking rhythm. A kid who can't yet skip, hop and gallop with any consistency is being asked to layer a new skill on top of one that isn't there yet. Most clubs that run youth hurdle programmes start introducing the pattern around 8 to 10, using hurdles well under knee height or lines of cones, long before a kid ever sees a regulation barrier.
Signs a kid is ready, not a date on the calendar
- They can already run a relaxed sprint stride without a coach correcting basic mechanics every rep.
- They can skip and hop rhythmically, which is the same coordination a three-step hurdle pattern needs.
- They are not afraid of the obstacle. A kid who chops their stride and ducks around a low hurdle is not ready for a taller one, whatever their age says.
- They can take off from either leg without much coaching, even if one leg is clearly preferred.
Why rushing the height costs more than it saves
A hurdle that is too tall for a kid's current stride teaches them to jump it instead of run over it, and that habit is harder to unlearn later than it would have been to avoid in the first place. Lower the hurdle, not the expectation. Most of the technique that matters later, a steady rhythm, a consistent lead leg, running rather than jumping, gets built at heights far below what a 14 or 15 year old will eventually clear.
A camera can tell you, once a kid is actually running over a hurdle, whether their stride pattern holds and which leg they lead with. It cannot tell you whether a 9 year old's hips and growth plates are ready for the next height up. That judgment still belongs to a coach who knows the kid, not to a measurement.

Seven and eight both show up at the highest level of the sport, so the number that matters is not tradition, it is whether the athlete arrives at the mark running over the barrier rather than jumping it.
