Should you switch a high jumper from scissors to the flop?
Yes, if the pit is right and the athlete has an approach, and no in the middle of a season if either is missing.
A scissors jumper who is clearing respectable heights will eventually ask about going backwards over the bar, and the answer is usually yes, with two conditions that are not negotiable and one that is a matter of timing.
The pit decides first
A flop lands on the upper back and shoulders. That requires a deep, modern foam landing area of the size the rules describe, in good condition, with the front cover intact. A shallow mat, a pit with gaps between sections, or the old thin crash mat in the corner of the gym is not a place to learn this, and no amount of enthusiasm changes that. A scissors landing on the feet is the reason scissors exists, and it remains the correct choice anywhere the pit is not right.
The second non-negotiable is supervision while the shape is being learned. This is the one event where an athlete practising alone on the wrong equipment can get seriously hurt in a way the other events do not offer.
What actually has to be taught
Very little of the flop is the part over the bar. The difficulty is the curve: the last four or five strides run on an arc, leaning into it, so that the plant foot lands with the body already rotating towards the bar. An athlete who runs straight at the bar and then twists is doing something else that happens to land on their back.
- Back-overs from standing onto the mat, with no bar, to learn the shape and the landing.
- Five-step curve runs with no bar at all, to make the arc and the plant repeatable.
- Short-approach flops over an elastic band rather than a bar, because an athlete frightened of a metal bar will not commit, and explaining that it will be fine does not help.
- Only then a full approach, and expect the first few weeks of full approach jumps to be worse than their scissors.
Mid-season, honestly
The change costs height before it pays it back. If the athlete is scoring for a team every week, teach the flop in training and keep scissors for competition until the flop clears more than it does. Athletes will not want this. It is still the right answer, and it removes the pressure that makes the first competition flop a bad one.
One rule worth knowing before anybody gets creative: the takeoff has to be from one foot. A two-footed takeoff is a failed attempt whatever it clears.
Where the app helps
The plant is the same job in both styles, and the high jump setting reports hip rise as a share of body height, the takeoff angle, and knee fold and extension. That gives you a fair test of whether the change is working: film several scissors plants and several flop plants from the same camera position, and compare the hip rise. A flop that lifts the athlete less than their scissors did means the approach, not the style, is the thing that got worse. A takeoff angle under roughly 30 degrees is the app telling you the approach is carrying them past the bar rather than up it.
It does not see the bar, does not judge the arch, and has nothing to say about the clearance. An upside-down athlete filmed from the side is not something a pose tracker should be trusted on, and the app does not pretend otherwise. For the shape over the bar, step through the frames yourself.
Same camera position, same bar height, same session when you compare two styles. Otherwise you are measuring the weather as much as the jump.
