How long should a high jumper's approach be?
The honest answer is set by how many strides it takes an athlete to reach a speed they can still control on the curve, not a number to copy.
Ask this question online and a number comes back fast: eight steps, ten steps, a straight answer for a question that does not have one. The approach length that works for one athlete is wrong for another, and handing a beginner a fixed step count usually just moves the problem from the plant to the run-up.
What the length is actually for
The approach exists to get the athlete to a controllable speed on a curve, not to their fastest possible speed. Too short, and the athlete arrives at the plant without enough speed to convert into height, no matter how good the takeoff looks. Too long, and the athlete cannot hold the curve at the speed it built: the last few strides drift wide, the plant point moves from jump to jump, and a jumper who cannot hit the same spot twice cannot be coached on the plant at all.
How to find the right length for one athlete
- Start from a shorter approach than feels ambitious and add a stride at a time, checking that the plant foot lands in the same place, relative to the bar, each attempt.
- The moment extra steps stop producing a better jump, or the plant point starts moving around, that is the ceiling for that athlete right now, not a permanent number.
- Reassess it through a season. An athlete who gets faster over the winter can usually hold control at a longer approach by spring, and the number is allowed to change.
A repeatable approach that is slightly short beats an ambitious one that lands somewhere different every time. The plant is the one part of the jump everything else depends on, and it cannot be built on a foundation that moves.

None of that reads the curve itself. A side-on camera at the pit sees the plant clearly and the run-up barely at all, so whether the athlete is leaning into the curve correctly on the way in is still something to watch from behind or above, not from the numbers.
